It’s wise to be aware of the latest trends in brim sizes and colors, and crown shapes, but you want to consider a few key areas that will make or break how well that hat sits and compliments the rest of your look. So, let’s spend a few moments to consider your general options when looking for the perfect hat for your face shape as well as your preferences.
Your face shape is the most crucial factor to consider when shopping for your next hat. You may be unaware of your face shape like I was until recently (hint: ask your significant other if you want an honest opinion), or very aware and simply looking for some style tips. Either way, take a look below to see how to determine your face shape, and what hat styles are best suited for you.
First, let’s learn how to determine the shape of your face.
There are 7 main types of face shapes. They each vary depending on the length of your face in comparison with other features on your face (e.g. cheekbones, forehead, chin, and jawline).
We’ve included illustrations and descriptions below to help ease your search for that perfect hat.
When you have this type of face shape, the overall length of your face measured from the top of your forehead to your chin would be longer than the width of your cheekbones and your jawline. You have kind of a round jawline as well.
Recommendation:
If you have an oval face shape, you are the envy of many people. Oval face shape is the most balanced and proportioned shape among all types of face shapes. With this shape, not only can you choose just about any hat you like and make it look good.
OPTIMAL HAT TYPES:
CELEBRITIES WITH THIS FACE SHAPE:
Eva Mendes, Sofia Vergara, Angelina Jolie, David Beckham
It is quite easy to recognize a square face shape. It would have the same width of the cheekbones, forehead, and jawline. The jawline is quite boxy and defined as well.
Recommendation:
Square-jawed people are best suited for rounder hats that even out the cut, crisp lines of the face. Round and asymmetrical hats provide contrast to sharp jawlines.
OPTIMAL HAT TYPES:
Bowler, Center Dent Fedora, Fashion Beanie
CELEBRITIES WITH THIS FACE SHAPE:
Jessica Simpson, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Richie, Demi Moore, Keith Urban, Brad Pitt
With this type of face shape, you have a forehead, cheekbones, and jawline of the same length. Your face length from the top of your forehead to your chin would be longer than the width of your face.
As the name suggests, this face shape resembles a heart with a pointed chin, a wider forehead, and narrower cheekbones.
Recommendation:
Any hat with a medium-sized brim is perfect for someone with a heart-shaped face. The concern in this case is to balance out a wide forehead. If the brim is too large, the forehead will have an even wider appearance than normal. Other than that, this shape allows for a variety of different styles.
OPTIMAL HAT TYPES:
CELEBRITIES WITH THIS FACE SHAPE:
Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johanssen, Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Rihanna
If your face belongs to this type, you have a long face. Your cheekbone is slightly shorter. Your forehead is shorter than your cheekbones and your jawline is the smallest. You have a pointed chin.
When your cheekbones are as wide as the overall length of your face and slightly wider than your forehead and your roundish jawline, you have a round face.
Recommendation:
Round faces work well with hats that have sharp lines and tall, decorative crowns that are at least as wide as the face. Asymmetrical brims should be selected, or straight brims should be slanted to create attractive angles. These details all give great proportion and shape to a round face.
OPTIMAL HAT TYPES:
CELEBRITIES WITH THIS FACE SHAPE:
Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Winslet, Kate Upton, Kanye West
A person would have a triangle face shape if he has a large jawline, smaller cheekbones, and an even smaller forehead.
Recommendation:
For those with a face-shape, tall hat crowns that sit high on the head should be avoided, as they add too much height to the face and head area. Crowns should be deep enough to cover an ample portion of the forehead to even out the length of the face. Wide brims can be worn, especially ones that are turned downward.
OPTIMAL HAT TYPES:
Wide Brim, Sun Hat, Beret
CELEBRITIES WITH THIS FACE SHAPE:
Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson, Liv Tyler, Teri Hatcher, Ryan Gosling
So there you have it.
If you can’t seem to identify with any of these shapes, as always feel free to just be yourself and wear whatever makes you feel good and don’t be afraid to explore your options.
